Friday Media Group

Your role as Database Administrator will see you get involved with many exciting projects across the group, working across a range of current software and integrating with new technologies. The Friday Media Group, utilizes a number of databases and search technologies. Primarily MariaDB MYSQL however we also have investments in MS SQL Server, MongoDB, Solr and Elasticsearch.

The Database Administrator will work closely with the IT/DevOPS team and development team  to ensure that data and servers are available, monitored, optimised, updated and secured.  You will also be responsible for data integrity, making sure that the appropriate backups are in place and routinely verified.  You will play a key part in helping to develop and maintain best practices around database design, documentation, standards and database deployments.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure availability of databases implemented across the Friday Media Group
  • Ensure that all automated and scheduled tasks complete successfully
  • Implement, document and monitor appropriate backup and restore verification procedures
  • Proactively monitor database and Solr servers for faults and decreases in performance, highlighting query or database inefficiencies to product owners, development and operations staff as necessary
  • Make recommendation of software patches and upgrades as they become available
  • Ensure that data integrity and security is maintained at all times
  • Produce and maintain documentation about databases and disaster recovery procedures
  • Administer changes to production, staging and development database servers and databases as required
  • Implement or advise on data archive scripts as required in line with group data policy
  • Be an escalation point for DEVOPS/IT in troubleshooting database server issues

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 1 years experience in a similar role
  • Minimum 1 years experience working with mysql databases
  • Good working knowledge of SQL commands and SQL toolsets
  • Understanding and Knowledge of database security, backup and recovery, and performance monitoring
  • Understanding of relational data modelling
  • Excellent eye for detail
  • Strong mathematical and statistical knowledge
  • Good written and verbal communications

Desirable Experience/ knowledge

  • Working within a Devops team
  • Solr
  • Team management skill
  • Familiarity with Cloud hosted database environments
  • Hands on experience of Galera Cluster
  • Xtrabackup / Mariabackup
  • MySQL – MariaDB 10.4
